The Residence, with its unique cantilevered staircase, was built between 1720 and 1744. The most important fresco painter of the time, the Venetian Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, created the largest continuous fresco in the world in this staircase. Today, parts of the Residenz are used by the university and the Martin von Wagner Museum.

In addition to the Residenz, the city's landmarks include the Old University, the Käppele (a pilgrimage church), the Huttenschlösschen, the Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist - but the city's most famous landmark is the Marienberg Fortress, also known as the "Marienfeste". The universities play a major role: The Julius-Maximilians-Universität, the University of Music and the University of Applied Sciences, together with the Würzburg city administration, are the two largest employers. Otherwise, the city is dominated by small and medium-sized companies in the service sector.
